MATTING POLICY

Our priority at Smooch My Pooch is your dog’s wellbeing. Extreme matting can cause brush burns, skin irritation and unnecessary stress on your dog. Therefore, we will only demat your dog where it is safe to do so.

For double coated breeds, such as Pomeranians and Chow Chow’s (amongst others), who cannot be shaved, if the coat is extremely matted where the majority of the appointment time is consumed by dematting, a restoration coat fee must be paid and a separate booking must be made for a new grooming appointment where the wash, dry and styling will be carried out. This appointment will be considered as a new full groom.

For non-double coated breeds, you will be offered either:

  • to shave your dog’s coat off (this will be very short, almost skin short), or

  • to demat your dog’s coat (where safe to do so).

Both shall incur an additional dematting charge which will be discussed at your appointment as this is subject to size, but please refer to our pricing page.

Both shaving and dematting are time consuming. There is a misconception that shaving a dog’s matted coat is the easier route, however, the following must happen:

  • extremely careful and slow shaving underneath the tight matting prior to washing. This part alone can take up to 45 minutes depending on the severity of the matting.

  • after the matting has been carefully shaved off the body, the dog is then washed and dried.

  • once washed and dried, the dog will be shaved again and scissored and the head will be styled to finish.
